Manhattan Birth
Mentor Program Doulas

These doulas are alumni and current participants of the Manhattan Birth Mentor Program and are a close part of the Manhattan Birth community.  We think they are terrific!

They are all professionally trained as doulas, and are working on advanced trainings in a myriad of birth topics, all the courses Manhattan Birth has to offer, and are being personally mentored by our founder, Tanya Wills, and our entire team as they grow their doula practices.

Each has a different level of experience and special skills to offer. We know you will love them as much as we do.

They share the Manhattan Birth style of devotion to their clients in the down-to-earth, heartfelt way and are a huge part of the fabric of our community.

They have been in practice more than one year in a variety of birth settings.
Thamar Innocent (she/her) is a trained birth and postpartum doula and her goal is to create a space filled with support, resources, advocacy, love and sometimes just a listening ear. Her passion is rooted in a Caribbean culture that prides themselves on caring for the woman from preconception through her transition into motherhood. Thamar feels that her purpose is to support and empower moms to lead a holistic lifestyle that works for them. Thamar is also a certified health coach and received her B.S in Health Services Administration in NYC. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and 7-year-old son.
Janeé Danielle Aiken is a holistic birth & postpartum doula, birth assistant, second year herbalist apprentice, and yoni steam practitioner. Janeé began doula work as a reproductive justice advocate and certified with Ancient Song Doula Services in 2013. Her continued training has shaped her into a birth worker who’s supportive of belly or vaginal birth in a hospital, at home, or birthing center. Janeé’s mechanisms are informative, respectful, intuitive, holistic, and culturally sensitive to the birthing person. She’s passionate that she can help to liberate more women, birthing persons, and families in the NYC/Long Island area. It is an honor for Janeé to guide, support, and protect her clients as they develop and advocate for their own needs throughout their journey. It has allowed her to empower, improve, and inspire a mother’s ability to have a safe and memorable birth while reminding and affirming their capabilities. Janeé aspires to pursue a more formal education in the field of reproductive advocacy in the near future.
Bori Laki (she/her) is certified Advanced Holistic doula, and a certified aromatherapist. She is also a DONA-trained Birth and Postpartum Doula. Bori is offering birth and postpartum doula services in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens and Long Island, where she lives with her husband and two teenage boys. Born and raised in Budapest (Hungary), Bori brings the love of nature and natural remedies, specifically essential oils, aromatherapy and homeopathy to her work, to aid the birth, breastfeeding and postpartum period. She uses comforting touch, massage, spinning babies exercises, breathing techniques, and, being a passionate and long time practitioner of yoga, yogi relaxation to help the mother (and sometimes the partner as well) cope with labor. Her main goal as a doula is to help the birthing mother feel as safe, comfortable and informed as possible, and, even more importantly, work with her to build her self confidence in giving birth. She believes that birthing happens as much on a mental, and spiritual level, as on a physical one, and if the mother is well informed and aware of what to expect and how to deal with everything that’s happening, she will be able to keep her calm, strength and confidence during birth.
Yamilka De Dios (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and mother of two, who has been passionate about birth her entire life. After taking a women's studies course during her undergraduate work, her passion grew through both her pregnancies and births. Yamilka experienced birth trauma with her first birth and despite being a mental health provider, knowing in her core that mental health was imperative to a woman's journey into motherhood, she struggled to find the resources and help she needed. Through her second pregnancy, she found healing through the support of her midwife and later, her birth team. As a result of her experiences, she has chosen to devote her life to supporting women and families through this life transition. Yamilka has a deep desire to support, nurture and share her wisdom with her clients so they feel empowered to advocate for themselves. She believes it takes a village to raise a child, therefore a village to nurture a mother! She has a 9 year old son and a 2 year old daughter and is excited to be a part of the Manhattan Birth community. Yamilka's fee is $1000 but will also work on a sliding scale for our students!
Joyce Havinga-Droop (she/her) is a Certified Holistic Doula, certified birth doula and home birth assistant. She’s also a CPR instructor and a Spinning Babies® Provisional Parent Educator. She speaks English, Dutch, French and German and facilitates a Positive Birth Movement meet up in her home in Larchmont, Westchester NY. Her passion for pregnancy, labor and birth began as a young girl growing up in Africa. Thanks to her exposure to many different cultures, she’s able to pick up on your personal culture and beliefs easily. Apart from being certified and trained, Joyce is also your advocate and ambassador, your official representative, to join you on your journey in the land of pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. She will support you during and beyond this life changing event.
Jeanette Samyn (she/her) is a certified birth and postpartum doula and childbirth educator working in partnership with another experienced Manhattan Birth doula, Mary Pless. She helps birthing people and their families ease into change in ways that feel right--and safe--to them, with appropriate resources, physical and emotional support, positivity, and careful listening. In order to help clients ground, relax, and gather strength in labor, she uses movement, breathing, massage, stretching, rebozo, visualization, and other techniques. To help parents heal and tend to a new baby (or babies) postpartum, she creates space for them to rest, bond, eat well, and even get some time alone. In addition to trainings in comforting touch, rebozo, and havening, among others, she draws on ten years of experience as a teacher and academic researcher to help clients stay informed about the many options available to them in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, offering evidence-based resources without judgment. Jeanette lives in Brooklyn with her partner, their two sons, and their dog. She is thrilled to work with families of every sort in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Nassau County, and is committed to treating each of her clients with sensitivity, openness, and respect. She is certified in Reiki and is available for additional services to pregnant and postpartum clients.
Liza Maltz (she/her) My path to becoming a doula starting during my own pregnancy in 2009. After scouring resources and doing my own research I became aware of the many different methods and paths of birthing. After having my son I was eager to share my experiences and begin supporting others through their journeys. I am passionate about empowering women to acquiring the birthing and bonding moments they deserve. Working with me you will have access to a vast array of resources (traditional and non traditional) and range of help -- whether it be help through morning sickness, back pain, emotional stress, or just about any other pregnancy and birthing related concern. My personality balances a gentle touch and a firm tone (only when needed). Making you feel safe and comfortable is my top priority. I look forward to being a part of this special experience.
Maya Hernandez (she/her) is a Certified Holistic Doula, Certified Lactation Counselor, and Certified Hypnobirthing Support Doula. She also serves Spanish speaking families. Maya has been attending births since 2009 and is inspired by the growth that families undergo as they become parents. As a doula, her commitment to you is to help guide and nurture your natural instincts as you prepare for birth and life with a newborn. Her practice combines a rational, evidenced-based approach to birthing with a holistic focus on the body-mind connection. Her goal is to empower you to make well-informed decisions and to encourage you to work more intimately with your body via massage therapy, conscious breathing, and other relaxation techniques. Maya has a deep respect for the ability of women to birth intuitively when they feel safe, loved and calm. She practices with compassion, warmth and integrity.
Mary Pless (she/her) is a birth and postpartum doula and lactation counselor, and loves supporting families through this wild and sweet transition. She inherited her passion for birth work from her mom, a lactation consultant and mother-baby nurse. After getting her B.A. in Public Health and working at a reproductive health clinic, Mary trained in doula support with an experienced midwife/doula in Massachusetts and then moved to NYC. She is dedicated to meeting families wherever they are in their hopes and expectations for birth, and setting them up for a nourishing postpartum experience. Trainings: Birth and Postpartum Doula (Warm Welcome Birth), Certified Lactation Counselor (Healthy Children), Spinning Babies, Comforting Touch for Doulas (Yiska Obadia), Pain Coping Strategies for Labor and Teaching Breastfeeding workshops (CEAMNY), trauma-informed care, and CPR for infants and adults. Currently enrolled in Herbal Medicine for Women with Aviva Romm.
Jaye Maynard McClure (she/her) attended her first birth while in college and fell under the birth-spell of life-affirming transformation that is the gift of the work of labor, delivery and the childbearing year. She has learned from her own reproductive journey much of what she shares as a Perinatal Health Educator. She lives in South Slope, Brooklyn with her newlywed husband Spike, and is currently receiving ongoing education and training in The Manhattan Birth Masters Program. where she has trained as an Advanced Holistic, Hospital and Postpartum Doula with The Matrona. Additionally, Jaye is a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor with certifications in CPR, and NRP. Jaye particularly loves the wonder weeks of the 4th trimester, supporting, negotiating and reinforcing with confidence, the overnights and first weeks of newborn care in the everchanging landscape of growing outside of the womb and into your lives as newborn parents.
Sophia O'Shaughnessy (she/her) is a DONA-trained birth and postpartum doula, certified lactation counselor, and mother of two. She has additional training in comforting touch for birth, wholistic newborn care, the fourth trimester, and supporting LGBTQ families. As a former opera singer, Sophia never imagined having a career in healthcare. However, her own journey through pregnancy and birth with her first son totally changed that: she had an incredible, powerful birth and knew immediately that she needed to help other families feel that too. Sophia believes that every family deserves to have a fulfilling birth experience that they can cherish forever. She has become an enthusiastic advocate for families to make informed choices through the provision of evidence-based information. She believes that this is the foundation for families to be able to feel good about their birth choices. Realizing that there is an enormous gap in care during the early postpartum period, she has become especially passionate about supporting and nurturing families during their transition to parenthood or as their family grows. She loves encouraging new parents to follow their instincts as they get to know their new baby.
Shawayna Brown (she/her) is a birth, post partum, and sibling doula. Shawayna supports home, birth centers, and hospital births. She is here to support and guide you through your pregnancy, labor/birth, and through the first few weeks after your baby is born. She wants nothing more than to be able to reassure, encourage, and empower you during this journey.
Michelle Berninger (she/her) provides evidenced-based support so expecting parents can make intuitive and informed decisions around their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Her doula practice is focused on developing mindfulness, self-advocacy and a safe space for your empowered entry into parenthood. Michelle practices inclusive, body-positive, LGBTQ+ affirming doula services and is trained in HypnoBirthing. Birth, postpartum, and postpartum chef services offered.
Chantelle Richards (she/her) is a DONA trained birth doula, who believes every birthing family should have support during their birth journey. Chantelle’s interest into birth work came shortly after the birth of her son Jaxson. Her birth and postpartum period was not what she envisioned and she thought about how her story could have been different if she had the support of a doula. Her goal is to teach and help expecting family to feel confident as they navigate through their pregnancy and the first few months of having baby. In doing so, she will create a non judgmental and loving space for family’s to be comfortable.
Jennifer Reynoso Ng (she/her) is a trained birth and postpartum doula. She came to this work through her own pregnancy and birth experience. When she was pregnant, Jennifer felt overwhelmed by how much she didn’t know about the process, but also felt a strong sense of intuition guiding her as she nurtured her growing baby in her womb and during the postpartum period. Jennifer believes that every birthing person deserves the right to be heard, seen and learn to trust themselves through this very intense, transformational time. She looks forward to supporting you in this journey through listening, providing a calming, reassuring presence and making space for you to tap into your inner wisdom and strength.

She received her training through DONA International with Debra Pascali-Bonaro and Robin Lim’s Gentle Birth Doula Retreat (Eat Pray Doula) in Bali, Indonesia. The experience allowed her to dive deep into the birth world through understanding the emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of childbirth as well as cultivating a sisterhood with doulas from around the world. She received her Prenatal Yoga Certification with the renowned Prenatal Yoga Center, where she currently teaches classes.

Jacqui Feinstix (she/her) is a Westchester-based birth doula, certified lactation counselor, Lamaze certified childbirth educator, and prenatal yoga teacher. Formerly an elementary school art teacher, Jacqui was drawn to the magical energy of pregnancy and childbirth, which led her to follower her calling of supporting people during their journey to parenthood. She empowers birthing people with the information their minds need, the movement and breath their bodies crave, and her protective energy and heart. She believes that there is no one right way to birth, and that each experience is unique and special. If Jacqui’s not supporting a birth or teaching a yoga class, you’ll find her hosting her bimonthly new mothers circle and monthly womens gathering in lower Westchester County helping to foster a beautiful sense of community and sisterhood. Jacqui is a baby-wearing, cloth-diapering, magical mom in Yonkers, where she lives with her wife, young son, and a rescue dog named “Zeppelin” (yes, after Led Zeppelin!). Jacqui has a “whole lotta love” to give.
Sarah Levy (she/her) is a Birth and Postpartum Doula serving the NYC area. She trained as a Birth Doula with DONA International after experiencing the two vastly different births she had with her children, and the realization that pregnant people and families receive incredibly disparate care. Sarah firmly believes that birth is a natural, physiologic process that can be the most empowering experience of a person’s life—she wants you to get the birth experience you want and deserve! Sarah is a proud New Yorker, born and raised, and she’s also done some stints in California, New Jersey, and Maryland. Sarah calls Astoria, Queens home along with her husband, two children, and her little dog too!
Clare Amoako-Parks (she/her) is a birth and postpartum doula who aims to support birthing people in understanding their bodies, and the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual changes that take place during the transformative experiences of pregnancy and postpartum. Currently pregnant herself (due Feb 2020), she is aware of the level of self-trust that is required to make informed decisions that are best for the parent(s) and ensure they have the pregnancy and birthing experiences that are right for them. Clare has studied and taught health and sexuality education for the past seven years, and is passionate about helping people work with, rather than against, our bodies to further understand ourselves. She was trained to be a birth and postpartum doula by Mama Glow, and is excited to be a part of the Manhattan Birth community.

Claudia's ability to blend solid knowledge with strong intuition (plus a big, warm laugh) makes her a calming and reassuring presence in hospitals and homes. Her initial doula training was with Ancient Song Doula Services. She sees birthwork as a creative and political act, and a way to directly respond to inequalities in healthcare -- everyone should have a doula! Madeleine (she/her) is a Certified Holistic Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, and Certified Lactation Counselor. She’s also a native New Yorker, an actress, a lover of travel, and a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. With a doula/acupuncturist mother and a physician father, Madeleine grew up with a pretty balanced perspective on holistic vs. medical approaches, and she’s committed to supporting whichever path you take. Madeleine brings nurturing, warmth, and a sense of humor to this work she cares so deeply about. She’s also a knowledge junkie, helping people feel confidently prepared for their birth and/or postpartum journeys through prenatal (or on-the-spot) education, always with a hefty dose of grounded emotional support. Madeleine brings an open mind, deep compassion, and the occasional well-timed joke to what is so often an intense ride of emotions and oh-so-many questions. She sees her role as a blend of friend, confidante, coach, jargon translator, baby care expert, breastfeeding guide, personal assistant, and professional tiny human holder (no complaints there). She believes passionately in supporting people through the wild and wonderful unknown of birth and the fourth trimester. She feels incredibly lucky to call this her work and is honored to support your growing family.

She believes in assisting birthing people and their support team in achieving the birth they desire and fully respects the individual choices of each client. In addition to her nursing degree, Aimee has a Masters in Global Health and has conducted research on the birthing practices of Xhosa people in South Africa and on the sexual and reproductive rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. While in South Africa, Aimee learned the concept of Ubuntu - I am because you are, which she feels encompasses the spirit of the birthing process and has experienced stepping into parenthood herself.
Courtney is a trained birth and postpartum doula, working toward her certification through Manhattan Birth. Spirited about women’s reproductive health for as long as she can remember, she took the leap to becoming a doula after the transformative experience of her son’s birth, with an incredible doula at her side as a support. She is deeply and fiercely passionate about every birthing person’s right to be supported, listened to, and empowered in pregnancy and birth. She aims to honor the unique journey to pregnancy and the birthing desires of every woman that she works with, offering empathy, guidance, a listening ear, a loving hug, and a dash of humor, for good measure. She approaches each client relationship with unconditional and nonjudgmental support.
