I call this a Selfio.
We were so incredibly fortunate this week to have Whapio Diane Bartlett here at Manhattan Birth for the Matrona Holistic Doula Training Course. I met Whapio in 2011 when I received my certification as a holistic doula from the Matrona and hearing her speak was a total gamechanger for me as a birth worker and journeyer of life.
I started learning about agency, inner knowing, and resilience. I learned how to connect with couples more deeply so I could truly help them when I was needed.
When I was needed. That was something I never learned to discern in my original doula training. Whapio taught me differently.
I learned from Whapio . . .
When we become pregnant and have a miscarriage, we find our way.
When we become pregnant and don't know what to do, we find our way.
When we feel unsatisfied with our care provider or setting, we find our way.
When the waves of labor come and they are more than we ever imagined, we find our way.
When the birth doesn't go as planned and we need things we weren't expecting, we find our way.
When feeding the baby isn't like what we read about or what happened to our friends, we find our way.
When the baby won't sleep, when he starts teething, when he hits 2 years old and says 'NO!'
When we step into our matrescence . . . we become mothers.
We find our way.
There were a hundred times I wanted to be rescued from labor and being a new mom. I'm so grateful no one did it.
With all I've got!
